Petra Kvitova faced Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final of the Madrid Open on Saturday.

Kvitova had become the first player this year to beat Serena Williams, ending her winning streak of 27 matches with a 6-2 6-3 semi-final win.

Kuznetsova had dispatched defending champion Maria Sharapova in a similarly dominant display, to book her place in the final.

While Kuznetsova had won her most recent meeting with Kvitova, the Czech player had won three of their last four matches.

The players both held their opening service games in a cagey start to the match before Kvitova swiftly found her range.

She reeled off a devastating nine game streak to lead the match 6-1 4-0 and put the title firmly in her sights.

Kuznetsova held her next two service games, but never looked likely to stage a real comeback despite not playing badly.

Kvitova produced a stunning performance which including a raft of 33 winners and a mere 14 unforced errors.

The Czech player duly took her 6-1 6-2 victory after just 66 minutes on court, taking her incredible win loss record in WTA finals to 16-5.
