  • Intro:

Early reaction as China thrash Germany 5-0 to win their opening match in the Sudirman Cup in Dongguan.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Lin Dan, China, men's singles:

"First of all, this is a tough task for me as there are so many excellent players competing in this event. I really take pride in this opportunity to represent China in the first match of the group stage. I hope to demonstrate my good form in the competition."

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Lin Dan, China, men's singles: (On return to action of Malaysian number one Lee Chong Wei following eight-month backdated doping ban).

"I think his return is no surprise, it was just a matter of time. His comeback is a good news and helpful for this sport because many people are interested in badminton just because of him. I think both of us are trying our best to do our job, while I am representing China, he represents Malaysia. It would be great if we play our best badminton."

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Li Xuerui, China, women's singles:

"Germany has sent their best players on the court, and I had not competed with this player (Karin Schnaase) before. She is a good player, ranked 27th in the world (now 31st), so I was prepared for this match. I was not fully warmed up as their men's doubles retired, so I did have some difficult times in the first set."

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Li Xuerui, China, women's singles:

"As coach Li Yongbo said, we will face big problems in this Sudirman Cup as every team is strong and has the power to upset us, so we shouldn't underestimate any opponent."

SOUNDBITE: (German) Michael Fuchs, Germany, mixed doubles:

"First of all, we are ninth in the world, so we knew we were going to be playing one of the top four. Of course, China is one of the toughest opponents for us as they are number one in the world, the reigning champions, and they are very likely to win the championship again. So it is a really tough draw for us, obviously. But still, it's a great pleasure to play here - great crowd, nice venue and everyone was supporting our opponent, but we still enjoyed the match. We were a bit unlucky in the end, but nevertheless our performance was okay, so we have to deal with it."
