Second seed Andy Murray brushed aside Milos Raonic to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters and moved a step closer to winning his second clay-court title after success at last week's Munich Open.

Murray claimed the opening set 6-4 before wrapping up the second 7-5 to reach his 23rd ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.

Next up for Murray is last year's runner-up Kei Nishikori, who improved his head-to-head record against David Ferrer to 8-4 with a straightforward 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Nishikori extended his unbeaten record on clay this year to eight matches as he reached the semi-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the fifth time.

Earlier in the day, Tomas Berdych earned himself a semi-final match-up against Rafael Nadal after fighting back from a set down to beat John Isner.

After the 6th seed claimed the second set in a tie-break a breaker was once more required to separate the players in the third, but this time there no drama as Berdych stormed 6-1 clear and then clinched the match on his second match point.
