Petra Kvitova is into the Madrid Open semi-finals after a straight sets defeat of Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.

The 2011 champion rallied from a break down to win the first set.

Czech Kvitova then cruised to victory in the second 7-5 6-3; world number one Serena Williams lies in wait.

Also into the last four is unseeded Svetlana Kuznetsova. The Russian overcoming 13th seed Lucie Safarova 5-7 7-6 7-6.

The match went according to script when Safarova went on to claim the opening set.

But despite the Czech leading 5-2 in the tie-break, Kuznetsova levelled the match.

The 29-year-old then sealed the win to reach her first semi-final at the Premier Mandatory level or higher since winning the Beijing title in 2009.

Next up is a daunting clash with compatriot and third seed Maria Sharapova.
