Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki took on ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round of the Madrid Open.

In a cagey opening set, both players struggled to hold serve, but it was Wozniacki who eventually prevailed 6-3.

Having opened up a 4-2 lead in the second set, Wozniacki snatched another break of serve before holding to love to take a 6-3, 6-2 win and book her place in the quarter finals.

She will now face third seed Maria Sharapova.

Elsewhere, seventh seed Ana Ivanovic faced tenth seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Suarez Navarro put her opponent under pressure from the start., in front of a vocal Spanish crowd,

But erratic performances from both players saw Suarez Navarro squander four set points, before Ivanovic failed to convert two of her own.

It was the Spaniard who eventually won through, serving it out for a 7-5 set win.

The second set was remarkably one-sided.

Ivanovic cruised through it in impressive style, winning 6-1 and forcing the match into a decider.

Suarez Navarro made a strong start, but faltered when in a commanding position and was broken when serving for the match at 5-3, allowing Ivanovic to get the contest back on serve.

But despite the Serb's best efforts, the tenth seed broke her again to close out an impressive 7-5 1-6 6-4 and book her place in the quarter-finals.
