Last year's runner-up Kei Nishikori continued his quest for a maiden Masters 1000 title, at the Madrid Open.

Belgium's David Goffin was his opponent in the second round and the number four seed was taken the distance.

Nishikori took the first set 6-2, but lost the second to take the game to a deciding set.

The World No. 5 emerged victorious with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory in one hour and 53 minutes and will face Roberto Bautista Agut, the number fourteen seed, in the third round.

For the second time in three days, Andy Murray faced Philipp Kohlschreiber on a clay court in a repeat of last weekend's final at the Munich Open.

This match finished at 3 in the morning local time.

Murray took the first set 6-4, but the German fought back to take the second set.

The Scot had another gear though and cruised through the decider to close out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win in an hour and 47 minutes.
