Carla Suarez Navarro reaches the third round of the Madrid Open with a straight sets win over Julie Goerges on Tuesday (5th May).

Round two of the Madrid Open and Ana Ivanovic took on young Ukrainian Elina Svitolina; the pairs sixth meeting.

Ivanovic had won all of their five previous meetings and the Serbian made a strong start, taking the opening set 6-3.

But she was put under considerable pressure as the second set got underway, with Svitolina opening up a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Ukrainian was to win just one further game though

The experienced Ivanovic, and former world number one, proved too powerful over the key points and took a 6-3 6-4 victory to book her place in the third round.

Elsewhere tenth seed, Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain faced Julia Goerges of Germany in her second round match.

Suarez Navarro took the opportunities when they came her way to take the first set 6-3.

She went on to open out a 4-1 second set lead, and seemed to be firmly in control.

But Goeges fought her way back.

Two strong holds and a timely break of serve saw her level the set at 4-4 to put the Spaniard under some significant pressure.

But the tenth seed regrouped and went on to take a 6-3 7-5 win and book her place in the third round.
