Williams and Sharapova survive scares

  • Intro:

Serena Williams survives three match points to beat Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova needs three sets against Caroline Garcia, and Caroline Wozniaki beats Agnie Radwanska in straight sets in the Madrid Open third round.

    Script:

Serena Williams might have breezed through the first two rounds at the Madrid Open but Victoria Azarenka would take here all the way for a place in the quarter-finals.

The number one seed went on to win the first set on a tie-break but the Belarussian hit back in style to take the next 6-3.

Azarenka had three match points in the decider but she double faulted on all of them and the American punished her in the tie-break that followed.

Things weren't straight forward for Maria Sharapova either, she took the first set of her match against Caroline Garcia 6-2 but the Frenchwoman won the next 6-4 to send it to a third set.

That was in the balance until a Sharapova break in the eleventh game, then the number three seed served out to win it 7-5.

The one game you might have expected to go to three sets on Wednesday was Caroline Wozniaki against Agnie Radwanska but Wozniaki took the first set 6-3.

And the next 6-2 for a place in the quarter-finals, where she will face Sharapova. Radwanska drops out of the top ten for the first time since 2011.
