Fourth seed Petra Kvitova survives second set scare to beat Coco Vandeweghe in the second round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday. Third seed Maria Sharapova beat Mariana Duque-Marino 6-1 6-2.

Having missed recent tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami due to exhaustion before suffering an early exit in Stuttgart last month, Petra Kvitova continues to try and play her way back into form at the Madrid Open.

She faced Coco Vandeweghe of America in her second round match on Tuesday.

Kvitova made a strong start to the match and was always in the ascendancy in the first set, winning it 6-4.

But her game unravelled as the second set got underway, with her big-serving opponent reeling off five straight games to take the set 6-2 and force the match into a decider.

An error strewn opening game in the third set put Kvitova under real pressure before a couple of solid points ensured that she held serve and that seemed to spur her on.

It was Vandeweghe who faltered as the set edged towards it's conclusion with Kvitova eventually prevailing 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to book her place in the third round.

Later in the day, defending Champion Maria Sharapova faced Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia.

Sharapova, seeded three here, has struggled for form so far this Spring suffering early tournament exits in Indian Wells, Miami and Stuttgart.

But she showed few signs of such issues as she continued to play herself into form.

Duque-Marino proved no match for the pace and power of her Russian opponent with Sharapova cruising into the third round with a clinical 6-1 6-2 win.
