Britain's Andy Murray won his first clay-court title with a 7-6 5-7 7-6 victory against German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Munich Open final.

The Scot celebrated his success in his maiden clay final by donning a pair of Lederhosen.

It was a case of once more into the breach for the Miami Open runner-up after losing on clay at the semi-final stage in two French Opens and three Masters Series events.

The final was postponed on Sunday because of heavy rain. When play resumed on Monday, Murray edged a tight first set tie-break with a fine cross-court backhand.

Bavarian-born Kohlschreiber fought back in the second to level the match.

But Murray prevailed after a third set tie-break:

SOUNDBITE: (English), Andy Murray (on becoming first British winner on clay in 39 years):

"I think we are not very good on clay and that we should probably build a few more clay courts in the UK because that's obviously a very long time..."

With victory Murray also became the first British player in 39 years to lift an ATP clay-court trophy.
