The big serving 16th seed fired down a total of 13 aces in the match and never faced a break point.

Nevertheless he was forced to wait for a tie break in order to finally seal the first set against the Frenchman.

The second proved a little easier, as he closed out the match 7-6 6-4 and can now look forward to a second round match against either Thomasz Bellucci or Jeremy Chardy.

Meanwhile, another American, Sam Querrey, faced a tough battle against the Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The Australian teenager lost the first set 6-4 but showed some impressive resolve when it mattered most and battled to take the second set on a tie break.

Querrey was able to steady his nerves as the match went into the decisive third set.

He eventually secured the win after more than two hours on court, 6-4 6-7 6-3.

Kokkinakis proving a much more difficult hurdle to overcome than origianlly expected for the American.
