    Monday saw the start of the WTA Madrid Open, one of the major events in the clay court calendar that builds up to the French Open at Roland Garros.

    Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark took to the court looking to book her place in the third round.

    In her way was American Christina McHale, and she provided some good resistance in the first set, although Wozniacki eventually secured it 7-5.

    The second set proved to be a very different story as the Dane stormed her way to a simple win, 7-5 6-0.

    The fifth seed hit five aces on her way to the win and can now look ahead to a match-up with Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the next round.

    Meanwhile, later in the afternoon, the Madrid crowd were able to enjoy world number one Serena Williams get her campaign underway.

    She was up against fellow American Sloane Stephens in the second round.

    Despite a slow start by Williams, she soon found her rhythm and began to dominate her opponent on the beaten clay of the Caja Magica centre court.

    Serena secured passage to round in comfortable fashion in the end with a 6-4 6-0 win over Stephens.
