Roger Federer won the final of the inaugural Istanbul Open with a straight sets win over Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas on Sunday.

In the process, the Swiss world number two claimed his 85th title, winning 6-3 7-6 (13-11) in a match time of one hour 36 minutes.

The top seed capitalised on one of his three break point opportunities to easily take the first set in 33 minutes.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion then fended off strong resistance from the third seed, who saved four match points.

Federer, who claimed his first title on clay since winning in Madrid in 2012, broke for a 4-3 lead in the second set, but dropped his serve immediately after hitting a double fault and missing two forehands.

The Swiss continued to struggle with consistency in the tie-break, but a superb backhand volley earned him a fifth match point that he converted when Cuevas sent a forehand in the net.

It was Federer's third title this season following victories in Brisbane and Dubai on hard court.

Federer was appearing in his fourth ATP World Tour final of 2015 and his 128th career final.
