Brazil's Ministry of Labour embargoed construction work at the Olympic Tennis Centre and interrupted digging at the Velodrome on Wednesday due to safety concerns over workers.

Auditors visiting the site found there was no fall protection systems, no covers for floor vents and lift shafts and unprotected access ladders at the Olympic Tennis Centre.

They ordered a full stop to works in the arena, which is currently on schedule to be completed on time and ready for delivery in the third trimester of 2015.

At the velodrome, digging was interrupted due to a lack of fall protection systems, safe access, absence of an excavation project, lack of bracing as well as the lack of technical report confirming stability of slopes.

Recently, works at the venue were behind the schedule, It's expected to be delivered at the end of 2015.

In April last year, more than 2,500 workers on the Olympic Park construction site in Rio de Janeiro went on strike, asking for better working conditions and compensation.
