Meeke becomes first British WRC winner since McRae

Monday, April 27 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

An emotional Kris Meeke wins the World Rally Championship race in Argentina to become the first British winner since the late Colin McRae.

    Script:

This one is for Colin. That's what Kris Meeke said after becoming the first British driver to win a World Championship Rally since Colin McRae in 2002. Before his death five years later, the former world champion mentored Meeke who at 35 finally has his first WRC win....

    SOUNDBITE (English) Kris Meeke:

"What can I say. It's been an exceptionally long road."

The emotional win came in Argentina, where he'd held onto the lead he had going into the final day, which was certainly not without incident. Particularly at this rock, Andreas Mickelsen was first to clip it. Then Thierry Neuville did exactly the same moments later. It really could've been much worse that.

Jari-Matti Latvala's championship hopes took a blow when he suffered engine problems that also ended his team mate Sébastien Ogier's run on Friday. A bad weekend for Volkwagan but a good one for Citroen and Meeke, McRae would be proud of this.
