'Beaten Villa deserved a penalty' - Sherwood

Sunday, April 26 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood says he is unhappy with a late decision by referee Mike Dean when, with the score at 2-2, Christian Benteke was through on goal with only Joe Hart to beat but the Belgium forward was denied by 'a harsh offside decision'. Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City went on to win the Premier League match 3-2.

SOUNDBITE (English) Tim Sherwood, Aston Villa manager (on Benteke incident before the penalty):

"Yeah it is onside, it's onside. Penalty and a sending off."

SOUNDBITE (English) Tim Sherwood, Aston Villa manager:

Question: Tim, you must feel hard done by with that today?

"Yeah, a little bit yeah. I thought we come here and performed very well, even though we get a poor start to the game for us. But we stuck to the plan and I thought we dominated possession, certainly in the first period. But the pleasing thing was it wasn't just passing it for the sake of it - we actually opened them up a few times and created chances of ourselves."

SOUNDBITE (English) Manuel Pellegrini, Manchester City manager:

Question: Do you feel fortunate to have come out of that with all three points?

"No. I don't think that there was fortune. I think that we didn't play well today, I think Aston Villa play very well especially with the possession of the ball - but they didn't have chances to score, just in the two set pieces that they draw the game. So I don't know why we are going to be fortunate that we scored the third goal in set pieces in the same way they scored their two goals. But in reviewing the game, I think that maybe it was one of our worst games in possession. We have so many possession every game against every team that today was a strain to see how important amount of passes we lost."
