We start our round-up of the day's action at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix with a shock for Petra Kvitova.

The Czech player was up against American Madison Brengle in the second round of the Stuttgart tournament.

The third seed struggled to find her stride against Brengle who produced some quality tennis on her way to victory in just an hour and 35 minutes.

The cross court shots proving too much for Kvitova as she lost 6-3, 7-6.

No such problems for Caroline Wozniacki on the other hand, the Dane faced up with Lucie Safarova.

She was a break behind in the first set but eventually recovered to seal it on a tie-break.

Wozniacki then cruised past her opponent in the second with some wonderful baseline shots.

She sealed the win in under 90 minutes, 7-6, 6-1.

The day's biggest surprise came as top seed and three time defending champion, Maria Sharapova, was eliminated by Angelique Kerber.

She lost 2-6 7-5 6-1 in a gripping second round encounter that wowed the Stuttgart crowd.

Despite starting strongly and appearing to be on her way to a simple victory having secured the first set 6-2, Sharapova could not match her opponent in the second.

The German found another gear and took advantage of some erros the Russian to secure the second 7-5.

It was all downhill from there as Sharapova, who recently returned from injury, collapsed in the decisive third set.

The defeat means that Sharapova will slip from number two in the world to number three, with Simona Halep of Romania overtaking her.
