US Open champion Marin Cilic became the biggest casualty so far at the Barcelona Open when he was beaten by the world number 53 Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic.

Cilic, of Croatia, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by the 34 year-old who recorded his first-ever win over a player ranked in the world's top 10.

Estrella Burgos came into the match having won just one match in his past five tournaments and now faces 14th seed Martin Klizan of Slovakia for a place in the quarter-finals.

Third seed David Ferrer of Spain, made comfortable progress, beating compatriot Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-3. Ferrer is aiming to win the event for the first time, having lost four times in the final in Barcelona.

Eight-times Barcelona champion Rafael Nadal was a straightforward 6-3, 6-1 winner over another Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Nadal, who was beaten by Alamagro in the quarter-finals in Barcelona last year, took a comfortable win this time around and now faces Italy's Fabio Fognini for a place in the last eight.

Another local favourite, Marcel Granollers caused a shock with a straight sets defeat of France's sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Granollers, the world number 60, won 6-4, 6-2.

His reward is a match against the ninth seed, another Spaniard, Tommy Robredo.
