Carla Suarez Navarro successfully navigates her way through first round of the Porsche Grand Prix with victory over Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina in Stuttgart, Germany on Tuesday (April 21).

Ana Ivanovic suffered a shock first round defeat, 7-6 (8/6) 6-4, to Caroline Garcia at the Porsche Grand Prix in Germany on Tuesday (April 21).

Eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain needed three sets to overcome Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina in the first round of the Porsche Grand Prix.

Navarro took the first set simply 6-2, but the second went to a tie breaker which Rodina took to level at one set all.

The Russian would have been sensing an upset, but Spaniard Navarro showed her experience, taking the thrid 6-4 to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Elsewhere Ana Ivanovic crashed out at the first hurdle as she suffered another defeat to Caroline Garcia.

Serbian fifth seed Ivanovic was the 2014 runner-up, but was seen off here in a 7-6, 6-4 defeat by France's Garcia, who had already beaten her two previous times this year.

Garcia played some sublime Tennis and was a worthy winner and will play German Carina Witthöft in the next round.
