Key West hosts a particular of 'drag race'

Tuesday, April 21 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Drag racing with a difference - from Key West, Florida.

    Script:

A drag race never fails to attract a large crowd...

But this, is no ordinary race...

It's Key West's Great Conch Republic Drag Race.

The Conch Republic is a micronation that was declared as a tongue-in-cheek secession of the city of Key West from the United States in April 1982.

The celebration has since been maintained as a tourism booster for the city and it's easy to see why with events such as this.

Competitors donned extravagant wigs, heavy make-up, elaborate dresses and most importantly, killer heels.

And the height of those heels proved a key factor for competitiors, anything extra on the regulation minimum of three inches, scored extra points from the judges.

Of course, that extra height doesn't come without its perils, especially when trying to navigate through a tire run...

Thankfully the bond that is born through competing in heels means no man is left behind.

And most importantly crowds and competitors alike are treated to day of fun in the sun.
