Eight-time Monte Carlo champion Rafa Nadal faced a potentially tricky third round match, as he took to the court against John Isner.
The big-serving American took Nadal to a tiebreak in a tight first set and led 5-3 before Nadal fought back to take it by eight points to six, saving two set points along the way.
Undaunted, Isner stormed back in the second set, recovering from 0-40 on his serve to hold in the eighth game and then break in the next to go up 5-4.
Isner served out to force a decider, but Nadal quickly won four games out of five to take control and after two hours and 20 minutes took the match 7-6,4-6, 6-3
Number eight seed Marin Cilic joined Nadal in the quarter-finals following a straight sets victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The reigning US Open champion reached the last eight of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time with a 6-3, 7-6 win.
The 26 year-old Croatian's next opponent would come from the match between unseeded Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer and the top seed and world number one Novak Dkokovic.
Djokovic was in imperious form, delivering drop shots and topspin lobs almost at will, although Haider-Maurer managed to stay with him until he lost his serve at a crucial moment in the first set and conceded it by 6 games to 4.
Djokovic hardly looked back after that and swept through the second set 6-0 to wrap up victory inside 57 minutes.
