  • Intro:

A private funeral service attended by ex-players including Shane Warne and Mark Taylor was held on Wednesday for former Australia cricket captain and commentator Richie Benaud.

    Script:

Richie Benaud died last Friday at the age of 84 of complications from skin cancer.

His wife, Daphne, declined a government offer for a state funeral in favour of a smaller service at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park attended only by family and close friends.

In the memorial booklet, his family described Benaud as "a special person who means so much to each of us in many different ways."

Former Australian captain and commentator Mark Taylor described him as a generous, kind and helpful man.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Taylor, Former Australian Cricket Captain and Cricket Commentator:

"Richie, right off the bat, to be generous, kind, helpful and most importantly he didn't judge anyone who walked in to the commentary box. I don't think he judged anyone in cricket. He certainly gave everyone a lot of leeway and that was certainly the case with me."

Benaud, considered one of the most influential cricket identities of the past century, played 63 tests for Australia but was more well-known after that, for his career in the commentating booth.
