Matthew forced to retire setting up all Egyptian final

  • Intro:

An all-Egyptian final was set up at the PSA's El Gouna International on Thursday after Ramy Ashour beat France's Gregory Gaultier 3-1 and Mohamed Elshorbagy benefited from the retirement of England's Nick Matthew through injury.

    Script:

The final of the 2015 El Gouna International tournament will see Egypt's Mohamed Elshorbagy, the top seed and world number one, face compatriot and current world champion Ramy Ashour for the second year running.

The pair last met in the final of the 2014 World Championship, where Ashour won what is considered to be one of the greatest finals on record.

Ashour beat Frenchman Gregory Gaultier 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 on Thursday to secure his place.

Ashour, the elder of the two at 27, may have emerged victorious 12 months ago, but 24-year-old Elshorbagy will be confident of changing his fortunes when they face-off once again.

Elshorbagy has already claimed one World Series title this year - January's J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions.

His semi-final opponent here in El Gouna - England's Nick Matthew - retired due to injury midway through the second game, after winning the first 11-6.

But after what looked to be a straight forward backhand return Matthew was forced to retire, meaning that Elshorbagy will be heading into the final in full fitness.
