Halep was the last woman to beat the top seed who came out firing to take the the first set 6-2.
The second was a much tighter affair.
Halep eventually prevailed to take it to a third set winner takes all.
But Williams was too strong in the end.
Ensuring there wouldn't be a repeat of last year's WTA finals.
The final score 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
The American will now meet Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro in the final on Saturday.
