Venus Williams faced her sternest test to date at the Miami Open when she played Carla Suarez Navarro, in the quarter-finals in the night match.
The pair had played one another four times previously, with two wins each. However, Venus took command of the match early on with an immediate break and then at 3-love up on the Suarez Navarro serve broke again.
The 16th seed held her serve before completing the perfect set.
However, the tables turned in the second set as the Spaniard had her own set of dominance. She was 5-1 up on the Williams serve, before the net cord was on her side too.
The decider was a far closer set, yet at double match point the Spaniard created a brilliant angle to take the match.
12th-seed winning 0-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Suarez Navarro would play the winner of the day's other quarter-final.
9th-seed Andrea Petkovic taking the first set from 14th-seed Karolina Pliskova.
Pliskova had won the last meeting between the two, yet the German was making this one a one-sided affair.
A double fault from Pliskova rounded off her day as Petkovic advances to her second-ever Miami semi-final.
