We won it for Phil Hughes - Starc

  • Intro:

Reaction after Australia beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup on Sunday (29th March).

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mitchell Starc, Australian bowler (Q: You've chosen to wear the black armband throughout, was there a sense of wanting to do it for Phillip Hughes and did you guys speak about that?)

"I've worn it everyday of training and playing since the event. It's just personal preference. Something we wore through the test series and i just wanted to carry that on. He's definitely part of this World Cup squad and something I wanted to do."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mitchell Starc, Australian bowler (Q: Do you think that you younger guys can start a new dynasty?)

"Yeah I think this squad now has been together for a while and I think that the Tri-Series leading up to the World Cup, probably started before that, but that Tri-Series was really about leading to this final. I think we spoke about through the World Cup that we really hadn't played that perfect game with bat or ball, really all round I guess. So to see us all play the way we did, we used all fifteen guys through the tournament, everyone played their part. Along with the fifteen guys, the support staff have been amazing, but yeah I think every game this summer leading up to the World Cup and through the World Cup has led to this. It's something that we can take forward now with the senior guys, who've definitely got some time left in them. Obviously we lose Michael (Clarke) now, but we've got a lot of great senior guys around us, the staff have been amazing and I think the young guys are really thriving on that and it's something we can take forward now for the next four years leading into the next World Cup."
