O'Neill: 'Scotland is a big name'

  • Intro:

Reaction after the Republic of Ireland equalised in added time to salvage a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Group D leaders Poland in Dublin

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland manager:

"Well we started off tentatively in the game, we were a little bit nervous and just when we were starting to get into the game we conceded, from our viewpoint, a very poor goal. That puts you on the back foot. Our second half performance was simply terrific, terrific. We dominated from the 45th minute to the 90th and we put Poland on the back foot. We created a number of chances. We certainly deserved at least a draw in the game and perhaps maybe could have won had there been a few more minutes left."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland manager (on James McClean's performance):

"He was unlucky not to start the game and Aiden (McGeady) who hasn't played much football in recent times was just feeling the pace of the game. Nevertheless, one way or the other getting James onto the field was importance for us. He's played very well in my time here and it was obviously important to get him on. His time on the field was nothing short of excellent."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland manager (on Ireland's next qualifier at home to Scotland):

"Well naturally it's a very, very important game. I think we'd have to beat Scotland, yeah. I think it just boils down to that. We'll have to win that game. I think if the second half showing is anything to go by I think we're capable of doing it."
