Hodgson: 'Kane can emulate Rooney'

  • Intro:

Reaction from Roy Hodgson, Leighton Baines following England's 4-0 win over Lithuania at Wembley

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager:

"I'm really happy with tonight's performance and delighted for Harry Kane. There's been a lot of pressure around him, a lot of hype if you like around him, his name, his performances and it's fantastic that in the 25 minutes that he's on the field - it should have been 25, they couldn't get the ball off us so it ended up being 22 - in that period of time with his first touch of the ball he makes a good run into the back post, (Raheem) Sterling produces a bit of magic and he scores a good goal. So it's been a great week for him, we've been delighted to have him and let's hope it's the start of a long career for him."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager (on Danny Welbeck's injury):

"We were planning to take him off anyway but we had to take him off after that. He's being assessed by the medical staff now. Of course this close to the game, we won't get a proper idea until tomorrow. The medical staff gave me the impression that they're not terribly worried about it but they also give me the impression that Tuesday will probably be too soon. But we'll see."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager (on Harry Kane):

"He is still a young man but having said that what can be better than to make your debut and score a goal? Wayne Rooney did it a few years ago and he's never looked back. Maybe Harry can do the same. We hope so."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Leighton Baines England left back:

Question: "What did you think of Harry Kane's debut?"

Baines: "Yeah typical of him at the moment and the way he's going we're obviously delighted to have him here and the manager is delighted to have another option up front. More competition and it seems like everything he hits at the moment ends up in the back of the net and that's great for us when he's here."
