World number two Maria Sharapova suffered a shock second-round exit at the Miami Open as she lost in straight sets to Daria Gavrilova - a player ranked 95 places below her.

The 21-year-old secured a break of serve in the seventh game of the match, only for Sharapova to muscle her way back into the set and force a tie-break.

A sloppy Sharapova volley into the net gifted Gavrilova her first set point and another poor shot from her opponent - this time on her backhand - handed the former junior world number one the opening set after almost an hour on court.

Showing no sign of nerves, Gavrilova built on her momentum to take a two then three-love lead in the second set.

This time there was no way back for Sharapova, and Gavrilova closed out the biggest win of her career on her first match point.

Marking her first week in the world's top 100, wildcard Gavrilova secured a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over her former idol.

Sharapova has never lifted the trophy in Miami despite five trips to the final.
