  • Intro:

Alejandro Valverde took his second stage win of this year's Volta a Catalunya on Friday (27th March) with Richie Porte going into the overall race lead after stage five.

    Script:

Leader of the Volta a Catalunya - Bart de Clercq - looked in relaxed mood prior to Friday's stage.

The Belgian took hold of the white jersey on the Tona - La Molina leg of the journey which was the fourth stage.

However, here in Alp. de Clercq had company from the chasing pack.

Jan Polanc, Calvin Watson and Yohan Bagot made an early breakaway but they were reeled in some 40 kilometres from the finish.

Many tried to attack from the peloton but with 39 kilometres, there was a potent one with Ruben Fernandez, in the black, leading the charge along with Movistar team-mate Alejandro Valverde leading from the front.

And it was Valverde who looked to break away again with just 11km to go, however, Alberto Contador wasn't going to let his fellow Spaniard out of sight.

This lead was too much for de Clercq who could not keep up and this would be his only day in the white jersey.

The lead group gradually became whittled down before Valverde attacked. Contador grabbed his wheel but the lead group was down to seven.

Valverde finishing some distance after of Contador and the chasing peloton.

Contador was seventh and now third overall.

Stage Six on Saturday is 194 kilometres long from Cervera to Port Aventura.
