The investigation into alleged match fixing involving Javier Aguirre commenced in Valencia on Friday.

In total, 42 people have been named as defendants as part of an investigation by Spanish prosecutors.

The investigation centres around a game between Real Zaragoza and Levante on the last day of the 2010-11 season.

Zaragoza won that game 2-1 to secure their top flight status.

The report alleges that Levante's players received 965,000 euros (US$766300) to lose the game.

Former Zaragoza coach Javier Aguirre, ex-sporting director Antonio Prieto and former president Agapito Iglesias all appeared in court in Valencia on Friday.

Aguirre was sacked as head coach of the Japanese national team with the match-fixing scandal hanging over him.

The former Mexican international, Aguirre, has denied any wrongdoing.

The case will continue in the coming weeks.
