  • Intro:

A toddler from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has set a new national record as the youngest archer, according to the India Book of Records.

    Script:

Cherukuri Dolly Shivani will turn three on 2nd of April. On Tuesday she became the youngest Indian to score more than 200 points; firing arrows at targets five and seven metres away.

She achieved the feat by shooting 36 arrows each from five metres and seven metres to score 388 points at a trial event and was recorded by an India Book Of Records official.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Bishwaroop Roy Chowdhary, India Book Of Records official:

"Cherukuri Dolly Shivani, born on April 2, 2012, a trainee of Cherukuri Volga Archery Academy from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, scored most points in 36 arrows each at a 122 centimetres target face from 7 metres, and an 80 centimetre target face from 5 metres at VMC Volga archery fields, Vijayawada, on March 24, 2015, and that is a new (record in the) Asia Book of Records and that is a new (record in the) India Book of Records."

Shivani is the youngest sister of a former international archery champion and coach, Cherukuri Lenin, who died in a road accident in 2010.

Shivani's father, who runs the Volga Archery Institute where she trains, said he believes his deceased son has been reincarnated as Shivani, and he hopes she will inspire other parents to train their children, he said:

SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) Cherukuri Satyanarayana, father of Cherukuri Dolly Shivani:

"Looking at Shivani's achievement, even if 0.5 (zero point five) percent of parents get inspired, the country's hunger for an Olympic medal will be aroused, that is why I have trained Shivani because my (deceased) son is living in her. Although I did not believe in rebirth but now I have started to believe in it. My son has been reborn."

A bright future in the sport surely lies ahead for Shivani.
