SOUNDBITE (English) Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro:
"I mean, the pictures that we show, show this area completely degraded a few years ago... now you can see the area, the recovery of the natural vegetation here, and this a great legacy. And then, there's the sports legacy, I mean, all the (golf) clubs in Rio, private clubs, very elite, very rich people, and now we will have a public golf ouse, I mean, everyone can come and play golf after the Olympics on maybe the best golf course in the world, so who knows? Maybe some day, golf will be more popular than soccer and we can beat the Germans in golf competitions."
SOUNDBITE (English) Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro:
"It's something so crazy that people say this is an environmental problem for the Olympics. I mean, there are environmental problems in Rio. Well, let's take care of the big ones, the real ones, not the fake ones. This is a fake problem."
SOUNDBITE (English) Neil Cleverly, Golf Course Superintendent:
"What I get from this is satisfaction that I produced a golf course that's worthy of a player and the general public, so that they can play the golf course. There's no point in just putting a golf course here and then after the Games it goes to nothing. What we want to produce is a legacy for the juniors. If we can produce a Brazilian junior in 20 years and he becomes a champion, I've succeeded."
SOUNDBITE (English) Neil Cleverly, Golf Course Superintendent:
"Rank in top 100, you're looking at least top 70, after..."
Q: What's so special about it?
"Special about it? The uniqueness of each hole, that blends from tee to green, where the ball runs off. If you're long off the green, it rolls on to the next tee... very links style, very much a different... there's no difference in height of cut, it's all going to be firm and fast."
