Jelle Wallays triumphed in an incident-packed Dwars door Vlaanderen in Belgium on Wednesday (March 25).

    Script:

A minute's silence for the victims of the Germanwings air disaster - and then it was down to business for Nairo Quintana, Mark Cavendish and the rest on the Dwars door Vlaanderen.

This was not to be Quintana's day - nor, indeed, defending champion Niki Terpstra's.

The wet cobblestones caused numerous crashes - and the roads offered little respite.

Swiss IAM rider Marcel Aregger was involved in probably the worst incident.

He appeared unconscious after receiving a head injury.

Aregger was later reported to have regained consciousness in hospital.

And it was not just the competitors who struggled - even the experienced outside broadcast crew were not immune.

Lars Boon and Stijn Devolder joined one fallen camera bike.

As for the survivors - Jelle Wallays toyed with the idea of pulling away into the distance.

Every time though, the Belgian allowed the lead pack to come back to his wheel.

But with just less than a kilometre to go to the traditional finish line in Waregem, Wallays broke for the final time - and this time he stayed there.

The Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise's man defeated his team-mate Edward Theuns with Dylan van Baarle third.

Quick-Step's world champion Michal Kwiatkowski was fourth.
