Strachan plays down 'world's best 'keepers' claim

Thursday, March 26 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Scotland trained on Tuesday (24th March) ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Northern Ireland.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) Gordon Strachan, Scotland manager:

"Each game has it's different pressures, the pressure from the Gibraltar game comes from the fact that we're meant to win it and win it handsomely, but we'll have to deal with that when that comes around. But the game tomorrow is...it'll be good, because I think it'll be like the Republic (of Ireland) game, or the England game, where everybody knows each other, so there's a definite intensity to that game. We had it this morning in a (training) game, because they want to do well, so I'm hoping we get the same thing. If we can take what we had this morning to tomorrow then I'll be more than happy."

SOUNDBITE (English) Gordon Strachan, Scotland manager:

    Q. Former Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram said that the current three goalkeepers (David Marshall, Alan McGregor and Craig Gordon) are the best Scotland have ever had, even the best group of three in the world - do you agree?

"Well the Germans are not bad. The Germans have got three fantastic goalkeepers. I think when Andy was going he always had competition with Jim Leighton. There's always been a two, even at England, it was like (Peter) Shilton and (Ray) Clemence, it was always two, never really a three. We've got three terrific, terrific goalies."

SOUNDBITE (English) Gordon Strachan, Scotland manager:

    Q. Do you have any fond memories playing for Scotland against Northern Ireland?

"Not really, most of them are all bad. I wasn't very good."

    Q. You captained Scotland in 1992 against them, was that an enjoyable experience?

"I've got to say, I cannot remember that. I seriously didn't know I'd captained against Northern Ireland - I made my debut against Northern Ireland, and I wasn't very good that day. I nearly got Scotland knocked out of the 1982 World Cup by giving the ball away against Northern Ireland, and Asa Hartford cleared the ball off the line for the corner kick that I gave away. I just love Asa Hartford for saving my bacon. We had a closed door game against Northern Ireland in Albuquerque, that was basically just a social get-together, in '86...I remember the night more than the game."
