Kenya 'trying to contain' doping

Tuesday, March 24 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Wilson Kipsang tells SNTV he wants a 'clean sport' after the Kenyan doping scandal as he trains in Iten, Kenya, in preparation for the London Marathon where he will go head-to-head with his rival Dennis Kimetto.

    Script:

Iten prides itself on drawing athletes from around the world for high altitude training. It is where world record holder Dennis Kimetto and last year's London marathon winner Wilson Kipsang base their preparations.

But Kenya's image as country clean from doping is under fire after Rita Jeptoo was banned for two years and at least another 38 Kenyan athletes are believed to have failed drug tests.

SOUNDBITE (English) Wilson Kipsang, 2014 London Marathon winner

"I think the issue for doping you find that now it has created lots of disturbances in the sport. I think that in Kenya we are trying to contain this situation. Basically by creating awareness through the athletes that doping is not good. We need a clean sport."

Hopefully all the talk after this year's London marathon will be about the quality of racing, Kipsang says he expects to win but he'll have to go well as his rival Kimetto thinks he can break his own world record.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dennis Kimetto, Current world marathon record holder

"Maybe in London. Because you compete with the strong guys so you can push now and then."
(Do you think it can go under two hours?)
    "Yeah. I expect."

Whatever the outcome, these two appear to be doing their bit for Kenyan athletics when others have let it down so badly.
