  • Intro:

Jelena Jankovic reached the BNP Paribas Open semi-finals in Indian Wells on Thursday (19th March) when Lesia Tsurenko quit with an ankle injury.

Sabine Lisicki beat defending champion Flavia Pennetta in three sets on Thursday (19th March) to advance to the semi finals of the BNP Paribas Open.

    Script:

After surprising Eugenie Bouchard in the previous round, Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko met Jelena Jankovic in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells.

The former world number one broke early and quickly went into a 3-0 lead.

Tsurenko then held serve but Jankovic quickly wrapped up the first set 6-1.

The world number 85 twisted her right ankle in her win over Bouchard and she had it heavily strapped before the second set.

The injury was clearly affecting Tsurenko and, after Jankovic broke to lead 4-1, she was forced to admit defeat.

So who would Jankovic face in the next round?

Sabine Lisicki took on defending champion Flavia Pennetta for that honour.

Pennetta pushed Lisicki to three sets, but was eventually beaten.

Pennetta saved a match point in the 10th game of the second set to ensure it would go to a decider, and then Lisicki staved off two match points in the 10th game of the third set to make it a dramatic finish.

Lisicki hit the winning point with an ace and won to reach her first semi final of the year.

Her emotion clear to see, as she took a 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 win.
