Andy Murray took on German Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in California.
The match lasted nearly two-hours and was a baseline contest under the hot sun; tough conditions for both players,
Murray took the first set with ease 6-1, but Kohlschreiber battled back to take the second.
The British fourth seed earned the only two breaks of the third set and closed out the win 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Murray moves on to a fourth-round match against Adrian Mannarino.
Fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori was also stretched to three sets before overcoming Fernando Verdasco, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Nishikori double-faulted twice in the final game before advancing to the fourth round for the first time at Indian Wells.
Elsehwere Novak Djokovic also progressed to the fourth round with a comfortable 7-5 6-3 victory over Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
The world number one put together a straight sets triumph over the Spaniard who has yet to win an ATP Tour title.
Djokovic must now challenge home favourite John Isner for a place in the quarter-finals.
Also progressing in California was Bernard Tomic
He beat eighth seed David Ferrer in straight sets, 7-5 6-4
The surprise package of the day was Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Australia's world number 124 went the distance in a meeting with the experienced Juan Monaco, winning 6-2 5-7 7-6
