Rally Mexico: Tanak crashes into lake

Sunday, March 08 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Sébastien Ogier maintains his lead after the second day of the WRC Rally of Mexico, while a series of crashes causes Ott Tänak, Briton Kris Meeke, Robert Kubica and Thierry Neuville to retire.

    Script:

There was a dramatic crash in the Rally of Mexico on Friday, as Ott Tanak's Ford Fiesta slid off the track and into a lake during stage three.

As the car began to sink fast, Tanak and co-driver Raigo Molder scrambled to safety, with Molder remarkably keeping hold of his pace notes during the escape.

The shaken Estonians managed to swim to safety and emerged unscathed.

The car was later repaired and is ready to rejoin the race for Saturday's stages.

In the following stage Briton Kris Meeke was also forced to retire after taking a sweeping left-hand turn too fast and crashing his Citroen DSC into a bank, leaving the Ulsterman inconsolable.

Poland's Robert Kubica suffered a spectacular 360-degree roll...

While Thierry Neuville also came unstuck in his Hyundai.

But there were no such problems for rally leader Sebastien Ogier, who finished 13.5 seconds ahead of VW team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala.
