Rory McIlroy's poor form continued with a one-over-par 73 in the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship, leaving him 11 shots off the lead.
The Northern Irishman missed the cut in last week's Honda Classic and in Magic City he failed to cast his spell.
Home favourite Dustin Johnson is in a three-way tie for third after shooting a round of 68.
Also at four under is compatriot Rickie Fowler and Frenchman Alexander Levy.
In second spot is American Ryan Moore. The 32-year-old birdied eight of his first 12 holes but a double bogey at the notoriously testing 18th after driving into water down the left saw him sign for a six under 66.
Four shots ahead in first place is Kentucky-born J B Holmes. The former American Ryder Cup star launched a 376-yard drive to set-up an eagle at the 12th.
The three-time US PGA Tour winner is already six shots better off than last year's winner Patrick Reed was after 72 holes 12 months ago.
