Irishman Padraig Harrington captured his first PGA Tour title, ending a seven year wait on Monday when he won the Honda Classic.

The 43-year-old sealed the victory in the second playoff hole in the rain-delayed competition against 21-year-old American rookie Daniel Berger.

    SOT PADRAIG HARRINGTON:

"You know, the one good thing for me is, like I won in Indonesia about five tournaments ago, and believe it or not, when I get into contention I an hit the shots. So the problem has been, actually, when I'm start of the week, middle of the road shots, easy shots. I'm just not hitting them, when I've got tough shots I can hit them. So I wasn't afraid once I got myself, like the last nine holes I felt like a different person, say to when I was 9-under par."

It took two days to complete the final round.

Four of the five players who had a share of the lead hit shots into the water down the stretch.

That included Harrington, who appeared to throw it away when he hit into the water on the par-3 17th, making a double bogey to fall one shot behind.

Harrington, a three-time major champion and resilient as ever, followed with the birdie for an even-par 70 to get into a playoff with Berger.

    They finished at 6-under 274.

Both missed birdie putts on the par-5 18th in the playoff.

And on the 17th hole, the roles were reversed.

Harrington got his redemption, hitting his tee shot to three feet.

Berger followed Harrington with a shot into the water, taking a double bogey.

Harrington missed from three feet, but it didn't matter.

This means he qualifies for the Masters after missing out in 2014

SOUNDBITE (English): Padraig Harrington/2015 Honda Classic champion

"You do see some changes. God, even thinking about it, there is, you kind of go from the penthouse down to...still pretty nice hotels. Yeah, no, there's no doubt on your way back down it's a lot different, but hopefully this isn't an isolated win, I hope not. You know, I really do believe in myself. As I said, I think I found that mental edge that I've been lacking the last number of years and, you know, hopefully I'll be able to stick to that going forward and be consistently contending, because I know if I am contending, I can win."

The win lifts Harrington back up to 82nd in the world rankings after beginning the tournament 297th.
