Dame Sarah Storey attempted to break the hour world record at the Olympic velodrome in London.

The 11-time Paralympic champion was taking on Dutchwoman Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel's mark of 46.065 kilometres, which was set in 2003.

Storey began well but had slipped off the pace by the halfway mark and never looked like pulling back the deficit.

The 37-year-old, a former champion swimmer who switched to cycling in 2005, had covered 45.502 kilometres by the time the hour was up.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dame Sarah Storey, Paralympic cyclist:

"That was definitely the furthest I could possibly have gone in that hour. To be able to break the record that I did, the British record as well, was just... you know, I'm really, really chuffed. I always said I was going to come here and do my very best and hopefully that would be further than anyone else. Unfortunately it's not as far as Leontien (Zijlaard-van Moorsel), but she's an absolutely astonishing athlete so to miss out to her is no bad thing really."
