Hughes: 'Tackle on Ireland shocking'

Sunday, March 01 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Reaction after Stoke City defeated Hull City 1-0 in the English Premier League thanks to a headed goal from second-half substitute Peter Crouch in the 71st minute.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Bruce, Hull City manager: (Claiming Crouch's goal was offside).

"Look, I don't think we ever deserved to win the match, but you don't expect to lose a game to something like that, not at this level. There's too many decisions, unfortunately, we... and I know they've (assistant referees) got a difficult job, made very difficult here, under difficult circumstances - they get put under pressure from all sorts of people here... but you would expect on big decisions like that to get (it) right and, unfortunately, he hasn't got it."

SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Bruce, Hull City manager: Question: "You say all sorts of people (put officials under pressure), can you say who?"

"You can make your own mind up of what I'm thinking there."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Hughes, Stoke City manager: (Claiming Crouch's goal was onside).

"Yeah, I think he was at least level... I think the advantage should always go to the attacking side - and we were the team deserving of the break in the game, I thought we were the only team to have the attitude to the game to be positive and show ambition in the game."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Hughes, Stoke City manager:

"The day's events are tempered somewhat because we've got Stevie (Stephen) Ireland who's been on the end of an horrendous tackle in the first half, one that should have seen a straight red card (to Maynor Figueroa) to be perfectly honest, and why the referee's assistant or the referee himself hasn't seen the severity of that challenge... he's (Ireland) come in at half-time, rolled his sock down and I think everybody was taken aback by the severity of the gash on his calf, he's got something like 12-15 stitches in the leg wound. So for the referees not to see that challenge... I've seen it on video, it's shocking."
