Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer contested the final of the Dubai Championship.

It was the 37th time the pair had met in the Open era, putting this contest second on the all-time list .

The defending champion had to wait until the eighth game for his first break point, but he won it on a Djokovic error, and then served out to take the first set 6-3.

The second set followed a similar pattern.

The pair trading blows with Federer looking in ominous form as he went 30-0 up at 3-3.

Djokovic pressure on the Federer serve threw up two more break points in the eighth game, but again Federer saved both.

Two more eventually came along in the tenth game at 5-4.

But once again Federer served his way out of trouble.

In the very next game, Djokovic let slip a 40-0 lead and allowed only his second break point of the match which Federer pounced on to open up a 6-5 lead.

Serving for the match, Federer closed out the contest in an hour and 25 minutes

It's his third Dubai title in four years and seventh overall equalling his record of Wimbledon titles and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

It's now 20-17 to Federer in head-to-head clashes with Djokovic and 1-1 in the Dubai final, Djokovic winning 6-3, 6-3 back in 2011.
