Environmental activists disrupted a meeting by Olympic officials in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday (28 February).

    Script:

UPSOUND (Portuguese) Sandra (no last name given), teacher:

"They destroyed our (natural) reserve, they destroyed with our Marapendi lagoon. At this second floor, there are a lot of thieves, killers!"

UPSOUND (Portuguese) Sandra (no last name given), teacher: "(They are) destroying our city, stealing the money from people to organise the Olympic Games that is useless."

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, IOC President:

"Well, I have been advised of this protest. We then invited the protesters for a discussion which, unfortunately, I could not have, because then you would have had to applaud me even longer to get me out of the meeting room."

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, IOC President:

"The Golf Course, as you can see, is cultivated a kind of (what was a) wasteland before. There are some, as I was told, even some more of the natural resources, which have been claimed for this, have been given back to nature at the same time. Furthermore, the golf course did not cost any taxpayers' money. It has been privately financed. And, lastly, the golf course will be the first golf course in Rio de Janeiro which will be open for the public."
