"Realistically, the best hope that we have got is to go on and win this competition. That was always the target from the outset - to try to win it and get into the Champions League, which is a massive target for us.

At the same time we still want to go back into the league and finish really strong in there. Just try and finish as well as possible in both."

"I think that Ross (Barkley) is still really young. Like anything, people tend to forget that. He had a fantastic season last year. The big test of any player is to keep performing week in week out - season after season. No player can consistently do that. But with Ross, it is still a big learning curve. His performance on Thursday away at Young Boys was tremendous. He was like the team. He performed at a different level to what he has done at home. At home, in front of our own fans, he needs to relax a bit more. Play his normal game. Not worry about anything and his abilities will come through."

SOUNDBITE (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton manager

"I think there has been a lot of cheap talk from the outside. There's been a lot of talk about Romelu Lukaku. There's been a lot of talk about Ross Barkley and about our form. We just accept that - all we need to do is focus on winning games and enjoying our football. Ross is one of the best young European talents. You need to find a way to be consistent, because at times you will get opposition who will man-mark Ross and make it difficult. It is part of the learning curve for him and for us as a team."
