Highlights from the WTA Dubai Tennis Championships.

Two players who caused major upsets at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday met in the quarter-finals on Thursday, as 13th seed Carla Suarez Navarro took on unseeded compatriot Gabrine Muguruza.

Suarez Navarro beat the reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, while Muguruza dumped Polish number five seed Agnieszka Radwanska out in straight sets.

Suarez Navarro won the first set here after a tie-break, before Muguruza fought back to level the match at one set all.

The third swung back and forth with five breaks in a row before Muguruza emerged the winner, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 after two hours and 20 minutes on court.

Top seed Simona Halep was up against Russia's Ekaterina Makarova - a player who put her out of the Australian Open in the last eight.

Halep started well here though taking the first set 6-3.

However, Halep's serve deserted her in the second set as Makarova fought back to take it 6-1 and level the match.

Halep clinched the decider 7-5 in an up and down set for both players.

She'll now face Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the final.

Wozniacki earned her place in the semi-finals with a straights sets 7-5, 6-0 win over Flavia Pennetta.
