Morgan: 'Senior players need to stand up'

  • Intro:

Eoin Morgan admitted there is a sense of frustration in the England camp as they prepared to play New Zealand in Wellington.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eoin Morgan, captain, England, (on the below-par performance)

" Yeah, there is a sense of frustration and its again the big games that we play, this first two games in particular, are great practice for later stages of this tournament. And if we can get wins under our belt, against good opposition, it can breathe confidence for later in the tournament. Again ideally you would build that before all the big games but its just the way they fall."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eoin Morgan, captain, England, (on his batting performance)

" I think the fact that I have been through bad patches has helped, and again re-engaging with that belief, you need to have in that determination in your training, probably gives me more confidence than if it was my first time going through a bad one."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eoin Morgan, captain, England, (on what England need to do to beat New Zealand)

" Senior players would need to stand up, and will need to lead from the front. We didn't do it at the MCG which is disappointing. The guys like myself, Jimmy (Anderson), (Stuart) Broady, (Ian) Belly need to make contributions in order to make young guys feel quite comfortable within themselves. And making Jos (Buttler) the vice-captain I thought was quite an easy decision. Given that when i have captained in the past he has been somebody that I have gone to get immediate impact on the game. His view behind the stumps is very important, whether the ball is coming on, whether the slower balls are good, the bounce is good, and I think his knowledge of the game is really good as well".
