  • Intro:

Spanish third seed Tommy Robredo was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer in the second round of the Rio Open on Wednesday (18 February), while Juan Monaco of Argentina defeated Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-1, 7-6 (4).

    Script:

One of the most successful players on the clay court surface faced a relative unknown at the Rio Open on Wednesday.

Tommy Robredo has won 11 of his 12 ATP on the red stuff, however he was in a spot of bother against Andreas Haider-Maurer.

The World No 74 won the first set 6-3 and then had the 32-year-old on the run when he was already a break up in the second.

The Austrian then served out the match to-love to record one of his biggest career wins to date.

Elsewhere, the Argentinean Juan Monaco looked in good touch up against Jarko Niemenen.

Monaco raced through the first set winning it 6-1.

And he then looked like doing just the same in the second set at 5-1 up.

However, he allowed the Finn back into the game forcing a tie break.

The Argentinean survived and took the match 6-1, 7-6 to set-up a potential quarter-final with Brazilian Joao Souza.
