Intro:
Repeating his success from 2014, Britain's Paul Bonhomme won the opening race of the 2015 Red Bull Air Race at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday (14 February).
Script:
Paul Bonhomme claimed the Red Bull Air Race World Championship points in Abu Dhabi for the second year in succession, crushing Matt Hall's hopes of a maiden victory with a flawless final run.
The Australian, who equalled his best ever result and was flying with innovative curved tips, known as "winglets," fitted to the outer edge of his wings, had put in a series of consistently fast times over the weekend, posting a challenging time of 57.871 seconds to go top of the leaderboard with only Bonhomme left to fly.
However, the multiple championship winner held his nerve to post 57.787 seconds - beating Hall's time by less than a tenth of a second in the first event of the 2015 season.
Canada's Pete McLeod rounded off the podium, picking up time towards the end of his run to push Hannes Arch of Austria down in to fourth.
Arch had earlier received a two-second time penalty after rolling fractionally early when passing through gate five.
Last season's champion, Nigel Lamb of Great Britain, had to console himself with fifth place, having come up against the on-form Bonhomme during the Round of Eight.
Lamb put in a clean run, but lost out to another piece of textbook flying from his compatriot Bonhomme.
